For a brief time as the 60's passed into the 70's, the youth of Shrewsbury took Paper Bubble to their musical heart. This solitary release on the Deram label was produced by Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper of The Strawbs, who had discovered Messrs Brake and Crane when they supported them as The Strawberry Hillboys at a gig in the border town of Oswestry.The duo had originally started life as The Mood sharing their love of early Simon and Garfunkel and Dylan with the growing list of singer songwriters that appeared bearing acoustic guitars.A managerial change saw them come under the control of a local DJ at Shrewsbury's only nightclub called Chris Ian. In his dapper suits Ian sought to take the boys to untold glories and a fortune for himself. Sadly umpteen sold out concerts at the town's quaintly named Music Hall, often with the now electric Strawbs, did not take the now trio into the national charts. The album became a legend for those who remembered the old Deram label's product with vinyl copies changing hands for exhorbitant sums amongst collectors.The album is a testament to good commercial songwriting with 'She' a standout track infinitely better than known artists were producing.Cousins and Hooper used the production for the long term development of their band with the keyboard skills of Rick Wakeman an integral part of the final product.Ultimately the trio shed Neil Mitchell and became 'Brake & Crane'. A second album was recorded but never released although the tapes still exist. As for Terry he went down the route of education, obtaining a MA at University before leaving UK shores for the US of A where he became a business guru. Brian went into the retail trade and then teaching before leaving his Salopian roots for the West Country.
